General-Major of Justice in reserve Valeriu Troenco on April 5 was sworn in as Minister of Defense in the presence of President Nicolae Timofti and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, IPN reports.

Nicolae Timofti said that Valeriu Troenco is aware of the responsibility he bears and of his role. He voiced hope that the situation in the army will improve with the coming of the new minister.

Valeriu Troenco told the journalists that the army needs the support of the people. He will be making every effort to transform the army into an institution that deserves the people’s respect. He will also improve the quality of drafting.

Of the 8,300 people summoned by these commissions, only 1,500 were drafted.

Nicolae Timofti went together with Valeriu Troencoto to present him to the staff of the Ministry of Defense.

In 1999-2001, Valeriu Troenco held the posts of deputy minister of justice and director of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions. Between 2001 and 2004, he was pro-rector and lecturer at the Chisinau Criminology University.
