U.S. Ambassador regards Association Agreement signature a historic moment for Moldova

The United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, William H. Moser, has welcomed the signature of the EU-RM Association Agreement and the country’s European choice.

Speaking at the official reception, organized on Thursday night by the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau on the occasion of the United States’ Independence Day, William H. Moser called those events “a historic moment for Moldova”.

In his words, the Americans see that Moldova has chosen a European path of development – a path of a more democratic and favorable system of governance, and they are glad that soon the citizens of Moldova, like Americans, will avail themselves of this lucky chance and will get a possibility to live in peace and welfare.

The US diplomat pointed out the first results achieved on this path – the Association Agreement signature, receipt of a visa-free regime, roads being built all over the republic, irrigation systems being rehabilitated, Moldovan industrial enterprises expanding their presence on European markets.

At the same time, he said, quite much work has yet to be done, and positive changes do not usually happen without problems that have to be overcome. As all could see in Ukraine, all this can’t happen without citizens’ attention and constant participation. A genuine democracy requires that elected officials must serve to the people, their needs and aspirations. It was too often in Eastern Europe that corruption was an obstacle to the consolidation of genuine democracy and to realization of reforms necessary for ensuring prosperity and equal possibilities for all citizens, said the US Ambassador.

William H. Moser further said that the Association Agreement signing is not yet a finish line – it is only the beginning of the road. The European Union has given Moldova a road map to modernization and prosperity, which has proved to be successful in other countries of the region. The road map stipulates concrete measures and structural reforms that will bring transparency and responsibility into governance institutions thus creating a favorable atmosphere for economic possibilities and perspectives.

On July 3, Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti signed a Decree on decorating United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova William H. Moser with Ordinul de Onoare [Order of Honor] as a sign of deep appreciation for his special contribution to the development of friendship and cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the United States. Ambassador William H. Moser has been working in Moldova since 2011 and will accomplish his diplomatic mission to this republic at the end of this year.
