Victor Gurau: Moldovans are in a kettle where water is boiling and can flow over

There are elements that can destabilize the situation in Moldova and society and the government should be vigilant. “We are in a kettle where water is boiling and can flow over,” political analyst Victor Gurau said in the public debate “More frequent use of the notion of ‘fascism’ in internal, external and regional contexts: real and invented motives, goals, dangers and solutions” that was organized by IPN Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

The expert said that we have lately witnessed elements of fascism from propagandistic viewpoint. There are preconditions that cause concerns as Moldova borders possibly the harshest regional conflict that endangers the stability in the country. “If we look at the geopolitical confrontations of the main players in this region and the interests of smaller players, we can see that both of the camps exceed the normal limits. Nobody imagined that such a powerful county like Ukraine can be destabilized so easily by unanticipated instruments,” stated Victor Gurau.

As to Moldova, he noted that the country sees the confrontation of two components: profound Romanian unionism and profound Russian chauvinism. “Elements of fascism become visible and we must be attentive to what is going on in society. We are in a kettle where water is boiling and can flow over. We can have an election campaign where the people will be put in the situation to choose between black and white, the Customs Union and the EU, fascism and communism. The danger is that we have social groups that are profoundly antagonistic. Black days will come if we do not ensure cohesion and solidarity,” said the expert.

Victor Gurau repeated the message of the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin, who urged tempering the radical actions of the opposition and diminishing the pressure exerted by the government on the opposition. The expert said yet that the political class in Moldova is not mature enough to overcome this situation.

He considers that a solution for avoiding the use of such dangerous notions as fascism is to ensure transparence and communication with the people and to tell them that such tags are false in character.

The debate “More frequent use of the notion of ‘fascism’ in internal, external and regional contexts: real and invented motives, goals, dangers and solutions” is the 29th of the series “Development of political culture in public debates”, organized by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova and supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
